The short version

I collect as little as I can to make the app work. The app does use an analytics and error-tracking tool so I can see how features are used and catch problems, but there is no advertising and I never sell your information. The stops you pass are worked out on your phone and stay there. You can delete your account, Logbook, trips and photos from inside the app at any time. Stops you have added may stay on the map, but without your name.

1.Who we are

Route 66 Logbook is an iPhone app run by an independent sole trader, referred to in this policy as "we", "us" or "I".

This policy explains what personal information the app handles, how it is used, who it is shared with, and the choices and rights you have. If you have any questions about it, you can write to me at hello@route66logbook.com.

2.Information we collect

You can browse the map without an account, and without giving any personal information. The information below is collected only when you choose to create an account, contribute to the map, or turn on features that need it.

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password. The password is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form by our authentication provider and is never visible to us. You can also choose to add a display name, an avatar and a short bio. These are optional and are shown alongside your contributions.

Content you create

When you contribute, we store what you add. This includes stops you submit to the map and the details you type for them, photos you upload, flags and correction requests you raise, upvotes, and the achievements you earn. Most of this content is visible to other travellers, since the purpose of the app is to keep Route 66 documented as a shared, living record.

Photos

Photos you add are re-encoded on your device before they are uploaded, which removes the hidden metadata (such as the GPS location and device details) that cameras normally embed. We do not store the coordinates of where a photo was taken.

Location

When you use the map, your device's location is provided to Mapbox so it can show where you are. If you turn on background location, the app can detect when you pass a stop so it can be logged to your Logbook automatically. This detection happens entirely on your device. The record of which stops you have passed, and when, is stored locally on your phone. It is not transmitted to us and is not stored on our servers.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store a push notification token and share it with our notifications provider, Expo, so the app can send them to your device. You can turn notifications off at any time in iOS Settings.

Purchases

The Logbook is unlocked with a single in-app purchase processed by Apple. We do not see or store your payment card details. We receive confirmation of the purchase through Apple, and we use a purchase provider to manage and restore it across your devices.

Usage and error data

To understand how the app is used and to find and fix problems, we use PostHog, an analytics and error-tracking tool. It records a set of specific events, such as opening the app, switching tabs, searching the map, viewing or favouriting a stop, and completing a purchase, along with basic technical details like your device type, operating system version and app version, and any errors the app runs into. Before you sign in, this is tied only to a random identifier. After you sign in, it is linked to your account so we can understand how signed-in travellers use the app, and if you sign out, later activity returns to a random identifier. We use this information only to improve the app and keep it working. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. This data is processed by PostHog in the United States.

What we do not collect

The app contains no advertising and no third-party tracking technology beyond the usage and error data described above. We do not build a profile of your behaviour to target you, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

Like any online service, our providers keep basic technical logs needed to run the app securely and reliably, such as IP addresses and the time of requests. These are used only to operate and protect the service, not to identify or profile you, and we do not combine them with your activity to build a picture of you.

3.How we use your information

We use the information above only to run the app and the features you ask for. In practice that means:

4.Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information, and we never will. We share information only with the service providers that make the app work, and only as far as they need it to provide their service to us:

We may also disclose information if we are required to by law, or where it is necessary to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or of us.

5.Where your information is stored

The information you submit is held on infrastructure provided by Supabase, hosted in the United States. Our analytics and error-tracking provider, PostHog, also processes usage and error data in the United States. This means that if you are located outside the United States, your information is transferred to, and stored and processed in, the United States. Some of our service providers may also process information in other countries. Wherever your information is held, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled in line with this policy.

6.How long we keep it

We keep your account information and contributions for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile, your Logbook and trips, and your photos are removed. Stops you have added remain on the map, because they form part of the shared record other travellers rely on, but they are no longer linked to you and are shown without your name. The on-device record of stops you have passed is kept on your phone and is removed if you delete the app.

7.Your choices and rights

You stay in control of your information:

If you are in Australia, the Australian Privacy Principles give you the right to access and correct the personal information we hold about you, and to make a complaint. You can contact me first at hello@route66logbook.com, and if you are not satisfied you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict and port your information, and to object to certain processing. If you are in California, you have the right to know what we collect, to request deletion, and to not be discriminated against for exercising your rights. We do not sell personal information. To exercise any of these rights, contact me at the address above.

8.Children

Route 66 Logbook is not intended for children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact me and I will delete it.

9.Security

Information is sent over encrypted connections, passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider, and access to the backend is restricted. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information and to keep what we hold to a minimum.

10.Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example if the app changes or the law does. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we will make that clear in the app.

11.Contact

If you have any questions about this policy, or about how your information is handled, please write to me at hello@route66logbook.com. Route 66 Logbook is a one-person studio, so your message comes straight to me.
